New Year...Let the New Journey Begin

Moving into my new home on November 15 was really the first step of this present stage of my life journey. Now it's time to create the life of my dreams by taking steps to walk my talk. I've got a big beautiful yard, full of mature trees and the previous owner's interesting garden patches. All my life I've dreamed of living sustainably. The dream has evolved as I've aged and my life circumstances have changed, but elements remain the same...raise my own food organically, use renewable energy, use the car less and participate in a like spirited community.

Now that I've left condo life behind, I have begun reading Gaia's Garden to get me started on the process of designing a permaculture forest garden, at least in one large corner of my lot, which already contains a couple of big old apple trees and is bordered by a band of mixed hardwood trees. This place has tremendous potential. I'm mainly hoping that I am up to the task. I love the creative process and the ecosystem science behind permaculture. But, being on my own, the physical labor in preparing the earth for my lush garden is daunting. I'm no stranger to hard labor, but I'm not as young, nor as fit as I was when I first envisioned this kind of lifestyle.

My intent is to post my musings as I ponder the complexities of natural gardening and embark on design and implementation, ultimately enjoying the fruits of my labor.
